Dentures

Dentures (or “false teeth”) are custom-fit, removable replacements for missing teeth. They help you get back to normal function and appearance if you’ve lost your natural teeth. Dentures are designed to fit comfortably over your gums and help you to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. They come in two types:

1. Complete Dentures: Replace all teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
2. Partial Dentures: Fill in gaps when you still have some natural teeth.

What to Expect During Your Denture Appointment

The number of appointments you can expect when getting your denture will depend on the type of denture needed. Just remember, your dentures are precision-fit to your mouth and facial features, so we need to take our time to ensure a product that looks and feels great.

  • For complete dentures, expect 5-6 appointments (about 6 weeks) from your first appointment to denture delivery.
  • For partial dentures, expect 3-4 appointments (4-6 weeks) from first appointment to partial denture delivery.

Have Questions?

With proper care and handling, dentures are designed to last several years. However, periodic relines or adjustments will be needed in almost every case to ensure the denture fits year-after-year.
Dentures are typically made from materials like acrylic or a mix of acrylic and metal.
When you get your new dentures, it will take time for your tongue, cheeks, and lips to get used to having teeth again. Most people need about 30 days to get used to their new dentures. However, this varies from person to person and depends on several factors. At Lake City Dental, you can rest assured knowing that we will provide you with all of the tips and tricks for adjusting to your new dentures.
There is a learning curve associated with eating in dentures. At first, you will likely want to stick with softer foods. As you gain confidence, you can expand your diet to eventually get back to eating your favorite foods.
Coverage varies depending on your plan, but many policies cover a portion of the cost. Check with your insurance provider for details on coverage and any potential costs.
It is possible that you do not have the bone levels needed for denture stability. In cases where you do not have enough jawbone left to make a sturdy pair of dentures, dental implants can be placed in the jaw bone that will anchor the denture in place. The dentures can then “clip in” to the implants and your denture will be rock solid.
