X-Rays

Dental X-rays, or dental radiographs, are diagnostic tools used to examine the health of your teeth and supporting structures. They allow us to look at your teeth, gums, and jawbone with incredible detail to help spot cavities, gum disease, bone loss, and other pathologies. Common types of dental X-rays include bitewing, periapical, and panoramic X-rays. These X-rays are essential for comprehensive dental care, allowing for early detection and treatment of dental problems.

CT Scans

Dental CT scans, or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), are a form of advanced imaging used to capture high-resolution, 3D images of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. CT scans allow us to visualize every detail in the jaw with incredible precision, making them an essential tool for complex dental diagnostics and treatment planning. CT scans are commonly used for procedures like dental implants, root canals, and diagnostic imaging.

Teeth Cleaning

Dental cleaning, or prophylaxis, is an essential procedure for maintaining proper oral health. It involves the removal of plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth to prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Regular dental cleanings are recommended every six months to ensure a healthy smile and to complement daily brushing and flossing routines.

Fluoride Treatment

Dental fluoride treatment is a preventive procedure designed to strengthen tooth enamel and protect against cavities. It involves applying a fluoride-rich gel, foam, or varnish to the teeth to enhance their resistance to decay. This treatment is typically recommended for both children and adults to support oral health and complement regular brushing and flossing.

Sealants

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment designed to protect teeth from decay. This is done by applying a thin, protective coating to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This coating forms a barrier that shields the hard-to-clean grooves of your back teeth from bacteria and food particles that can lead to decay. Sealants are generally recommended for children and teenagers once the permanent back teeth erupt. However, we can also provide them to adults upon request.

Oral Cancer Screening

An oral cancer screening is an essential preventive procedure performed to detect early signs of oral cancer and other abnormalities in the mouth. During your screening, Dr. Lewis will examine the oral tissues, including the gums, tongue, and throat, for any unusual lesions, lumps, or changes in color. Regular screenings are crucial for early diagnosis and effective treatment, helping to ensure overall oral health and safety.

FAQs

Have Questions?

We typically recommend having your teeth cleaned every 6 months. However, this can vary depending on your oral health needs. An exam will be done once per year (during your cleaning appointment) unless our hygienist sees an area of concern.
You can expect a regular dental cleaning and exam to take about 45 minutes to an hour.

During this appointment, our hygienist will take measurements and X-rays (as needed) to evaluate your teeth and surrounding structures. She will then clean the tartar and stains from your teeth, making sure you remain comfortable. Dr. Lewis will come in during this time to conduct a dental exam. During the exam, he will evaluate your neck, jaw joints, cheeks, tongue, and teeth for any signs of concern. If treatment is needed, he will address your questions and discuss solutions.

Yes, dental X-rays are safe. The amount of radiation emitted by annual dental X-rays is less than the dose you are exposed to in a single day just by existing on earth. Additionally, the risk of refusing dental X-rays carries a larger risk to your health, potentially allowing hidden cavities, infection, or other pathologies to fester until they cause big problems.

Preventative services like the ones listed above are often covered by insurance, but coverage can vary depending on your plan. Check with your insurance provider for details on coverage and any potential costs.
