Tooth Extractions

When a tooth is damaged or decayed beyond repair, the tooth may need to be pulled. The area will then need to heal for 2-8 weeks. After this healing phase, we can begin treatment to replace the missing tooth. Some replacement options include a bridge, implant, partial denture, or complete denture. The type of replacement options available to you will depend on the number, location, and conditions of your remaining teeth.

Have Questions?

Tooth extractions are performed using profound local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort and swelling may occur after the numbness wears off and over the next few days. We will provide you with post-treatment instructions and an effective medication regimen to minimize your post-operative sensitivity and get you back to normal in no-time!
Be sure to avoid smoking, spitting, swishing, and sucking through a straw for the first 5 days after an extraction. You should also avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least 3 days after an extraction. After the first 24 hours, you may begin rinsing gently with salt water three times daily (1 teaspoon of salt + 1 cup of warm water).
If you are experiencing radiating pain 5 days after your tooth extraction surgery, you may have a dry socket. A dry socket occurs when the clot in the extraction site falls out, and can be very uncomfortable. If you think you have a dry socket, call Lake City Dental (or Dr. Lewis’s emergency number if after business hours) and we can help fix the dry socket to put you back at ease.
Coverage varies depending on your plan, but many policies cover a portion of the cost. Check with your insurance provider for details on coverage and any potential costs.
