Periodontal Disease Treatment (Gum Disease)

Periodontal disease (or “gum disease”) is diagnosed when gum measurements indicate that the foundation supporting your teeth is deteriorating. It is bone loss around the teeth. If not corrected early, bone will continue to deteriorate until all teeth are lost. Management of periodontal disease includes early diagnosis, deep cleaning of the teeth and roots, and shorter recall appointments to achieve long-term stability of bone structure and quality.

The main phase of treatment, called Scaling and Root Planing, is performed using local anesthesia and should not be painful. You may experience some gum sensitivity in the couple days after treatment, but this can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. The maintenance phase of treatment is just like a regular cleaning and does not hurt.
Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is the first warning sign of periodontal disease. At this stage, it is reversible with proper home care and regular dental cleanings. If gingivitis goes unchecked for too long, it will develop into irreversible periodontal disease. While it is no longer reversible, we consider periodontal disease to be manageable with proper treatment. If diagnosed early and treated properly, you can keep bone loss to a minimum and keep your natural teeth for the rest of your life.
Coverage varies depending on your plan, but many policies cover a portion of the cost. Check with your insurance provider for details on coverage and any potential costs.
